Bringing the Heat: The JFRD Station 71 ‘Beach Rats’ Custom Badge Design

Written by in DesignIllustrationLogo Design

At 63 Visual, we love projects that challenge us to create bold, meaningful designs that represent the people and communities they serve.

When the crew at JFRD Station 71—affectionately known as the Beach Rats—approached us for a custom firefighter badge design, we knew this was going to be something special.

Station 71, located in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, is home to some of the most dedicated firefighters in the area. Their station culture is deeply rooted in brotherhood, service, and the high-energy spirit of the beach. With that in mind, our goal was to craft a design that captured their personality, passion, and grit while paying tribute to their nickname—the Beach Rats.

The Inspiration: A Nod to Ed Roth & Rat Fink

The first thing that came to mind when brainstorming this design was the wild, rebellious energy of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s Rat Fink art. For those unfamiliar, Rat Fink was a counterculture hot rod icon of the 1960s, known for its grotesque, exaggerated features, bulging eyes, and high-energy attitude.

The Beach Rats at Station 71 wanted something with an edge—something unique, raw, and full of character. We took cues from Roth’s signature style to create a fire-fighting rodent with oversized features, a menacing grin, and a no-nonsense attitude. The result? A ferocious, adrenaline-pumped Beach Rat, complete with a firefighter’s helmet (marked with ‘71’), gripping a firehose, and exuding pure chaos and energy.

Designing the Badge: Fusing Firefighter Tradition with Edgy Illustration

While the Rat Fink-inspired character set the tone, we also needed to ensure the design honored the traditional firefighter badge elements that symbolize duty and bravery. We worked in classic shield-shaped badge framing, incorporating JFRD’s identity with bold, angular lines and a mix of black, red, and gold—colors that represent strength, courage, and fire service tradition.

Key elements we integrated:

  • The ‘JFRD’ (Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department) lettering across the top, reinforcing their identity.
  • ‘JAX’ and ‘BCH’ on the sides as shorthand for Jacksonville Beach.
  • ‘BEACH RATS’ banner, giving a nod to their station pride.
  • The number ‘71’ displayed prominently, tying it all back to their station identity.

The final design strikes the perfect balance between traditional fire department symbolism and edgy, custom illustration, making it a one-of-a-kind emblem that embodies Station 71’s spirit.

Why This Project Mattered

Every design project is meaningful in its own way, but there’s something extra special about creating for first responders. Firefighters risk their lives daily to protect their community, respond to emergencies, and keep people safe. Being able to give them something that reflects their identity, pride, and unity was an absolute honor.

JFRD Station 71’s crew was incredible to work with, bringing passion, ideas, and enthusiasm to the project. It wasn’t just about making a cool design—it was about creating something they could wear, display, and rally around as a symbol of their station’s culture.

Custom designs like these go beyond aesthetics—they build morale, foster camaraderie, and give firefighters something that truly represents their team. Whether it’s on shirts, decals, challenge coins, or even station walls, this emblem is now part of Station 71’s legacy.

Final Thoughts: More Than Just a Logo

At 63 Visual, we believe in designs with meaning. The JFRD Beach Rats project was about more than just creating a cool badge—it was about celebrating Jacksonville Beach’s first responders and the relentless dedication they bring to the job.

We’re incredibly proud to have worked with Station 71 on this community-driven endeavor, and we’re grateful for the chance to contribute in a small way to their legacy.

To the Beach Rats of Station 71: Thank you for your service, your dedication, and for letting us be a part of this project.
