Bobby the Robot Toy Design Show Submission

Written by in DesignEventsIllustration

Jacksonville’s vibrant art scene offers countless opportunities for creatives to showcase their talents, and the AIGA Jacksonville Designers in Toyland toy design show is no exception. Last December, this exciting event brought together artists and designers to celebrate the intersection of street art, toy design, and creative innovation. My submission, inspired by my love for designer vinyl toys, took an unexpected turn that ultimately became a memorable story.

The Concept: Bobby the Robot

As a collector and customizer of designer vinyl toys, I was thrilled to spend over 50 hours painting a Monster Hunter figure from Tyler Coey. The design embodied the spirit of street art, blending bold colors and intricate details to create a one-of-a-kind piece. I couldn’t wait to share it at the show and was particularly proud of how it turned out.

The Setback: A Lesson in Humility

The night before the big event, I applied the final coat of clear finish and left the toy to dry on the back porch. Little did I know, my 10-month-old boxer, Dexter, had other plans. By morning, my masterpiece was reduced to a pile of chewed-up fragments. I was heartbroken but determined to make the best of the situation.

Turning Lemons into Lemonade

Fortunately, I had taken a photo of the finished piece before its unfortunate demise. I printed and mounted the image with the humorous phrase, “My dog ate my homework,” and submitted it to the show. While not what I had envisioned, the piece sparked conversations and brought plenty of smiles to attendees. The story even caught the attention of John, aka Spanky Stokes, who featured it on his renowned toy design blog, spankystokes.com.
